Electrical Cardioversion: Helping Restore a Normal Heart Rhythm

Cardioversion uses a controlled electrical shock to reset selected abnormal rhythms. It may be planned in advance or used urgently when the circulation is affected.

Observation

Follow fasting instructions and ask exactly how to take your medicines. Tell the team about any missed anticoagulant doses. Arrange an adult to take you home after sedation.

Consultation Guide

Points to discuss

Use these points to prepare for your consultation.

  • Is the rhythm documented on an ECG?
  • Have you taken prescribed anticoagulants without missed doses?
  • Has the team explained whether a clot-checking heart scan is needed?

Stroke symptoms, chest pain, collapse or severe breathlessness require emergency care.

Overview

About this treatment

Electrical cardioversion delivers a brief, synchronised shock through pads on the chest. For a planned procedure, short-acting anaesthesia or sedation is used so you are not aware of the shock. It can restore normal rhythm, but it does not guarantee that the rhythm problem will not return.

Discuss your next step

Ask your cardiologist whether cardioversion is appropriate and what preparation your rhythm requires.

Indications

When it may be recommended

Your assessment helps establish whether this option suits your condition and overall health.

  • Selected atrial fibrillation where rhythm restoration is appropriate
  • Certain other rapid rhythms after medical assessment
  • An urgent rhythm disturbance affecting blood pressure or circulation
Care Journey

Your care journey

Safety checks

The team confirms the rhythm, reviews anticoagulation and checks whether additional imaging is needed.

Cardioversion

Monitoring continues while sedation or anaesthesia is given and the controlled shock is delivered.

Observation

Your rhythm and recovery from sedation are checked before the discharge and medicine plan is explained.

Ask your care team to explain each step and the follow-up you will need.

Outcomes

Benefits and risks

May restore normal rhythm and ease related breathlessness or palpitations. The electrical treatment itself is brief.

Risks to discuss

Skin irritation, sedation-related problems or a different abnormal rhythm can occur. Clot movement can cause stroke. Appropriate anticoagulation and assessment reduce this risk but do not eliminate it.

Recovery

Recovery and follow-up

Many planned patients go home the same day after observation.

Follow instructions on supervision, driving and work after sedation. Continue prescribed anticoagulation for the advised duration, even if you feel better. Attend the rhythm review because AF can recur.

When to seek help

Stroke symptoms, chest pain, collapse or severe breathlessness require emergency care.

Consultation

Questions for your consultation

  1. 1.What preparation reduces my clot risk?
  2. 2.What happens if the rhythm returns?
  3. 3.How long should I continue each medicine?
Next Best Step

Not Sure What You Need?

Ask your cardiologist whether cardioversion is appropriate and what preparation your rhythm requires.
