Balloon Mitral Valvotomy: Opening a Narrowed Mitral Valve

For selected people with mitral stenosis, a balloon procedure can improve the valve opening without open-heart surgery.

Observation

Bring echo images, earlier valve records and prescriptions. Follow the specialist’s fasting and medicine instructions. Report any history of stroke or bleeding.

Consultation Guide

Points to discuss

Use these points to prepare for your consultation.

  • Is the mitral valve suitable for balloon treatment?
  • Has significant valve leakage been excluded?
  • Has the team assessed for clots within the heart?

Severe chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, stroke symptoms or uncontrolled bleeding requires emergency care.

Overview

About this treatment

Balloon mitral valvotomy, also called balloon mitral valvuloplasty, widens a narrowed mitral valve. A catheter carries a balloon to the valve, where controlled inflation separates suitable fused valve edges. It is often considered for rheumatic mitral stenosis. It does not suit every narrowed or heavily damaged valve.

Discuss your next step

Ask whether your echo findings make balloon mitral valvotomy a suitable option.

Indications

When it may be recommended

Your assessment helps establish whether this option suits your condition and overall health.

  • Significant mitral stenosis with suitable valve anatomy
  • Symptoms or other clinical findings that justify intervention
  • Selected cases where clot and leakage assessments support this approach
Care Journey

Your care journey

Valve assessment

Detailed imaging checks the narrowing, leakage and suitability. An ultrasound through the food pipe may be needed to look for clots.

Balloon treatment

The catheter is guided to the heart and the balloon opens the narrowed valve under imaging.

Observation

The team checks the valve result and catheter entry site before discussing discharge and follow-up.

Ask your care team to explain each step and the follow-up you will need.

Outcomes

Benefits and risks

May improve blood flow and reduce breathlessness. Can delay or avoid valve surgery in appropriately selected patients.

Risks to discuss

Bleeding, heart or vessel injury, abnormal rhythm and stroke can occur. The valve may become more leaky or narrow again later. Further intervention, including surgery, may be needed.

Recovery

Recovery and follow-up

Follow the team’s access-site and activity advice.

Recovery is usually shorter than after open-heart surgery, but timing varies. Repeat echo assessment remains important. Continue any prescribed rheumatic fever prevention and other medicines as directed.

When to seek help

Severe chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, stroke symptoms or uncontrolled bleeding requires emergency care.

Consultation

Questions for your consultation

  1. 1.Why is balloon treatment suitable for this valve?
  2. 2.What would make surgery a better option?
  3. 3.How will the result be monitored?
Next Best Step

Not Sure What You Need?

Ask whether your echo findings make balloon mitral valvotomy a suitable option.
