Understanding Neonatal Surgery
Some surgical conditions are present from birth and need evaluation and treatment in the first days or weeks of life. Neonatal surgery is closely coordinated with the NICU team to support the smallest and most vulnerable patients through diagnosis, surgery, and recovery.

Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia
A defect in the diaphragm present from birth that allows abdominal organs to move into the chest, affecting breathing.

Oesophageal Atresia
A condition where the food pipe does not connect properly to the stomach, identified soon after birth.

Necrotising Enterocolitis
A serious intestinal condition affecting some premature or unwell newborns, needing urgent evaluation.

Intestinal Obstruction
A blockage in the newborn intestine that prevents normal passage of feeds and stool.

Anorectal Malformation
A condition present from birth where the anus or rectum has not developed normally.
- Identified at the newborn examination

Congenital Abdominal Wall Defect
A defect present from birth, such as gastroschisis or omphalocele, where abdominal contents lie outside the body.

- Visible defect noted at birth
